Reflecting on the Fourth Candle of Advent

As we approach the final days before Christmas, our Advent wreath glows with increasing brightness. Today, we light the fourth purple candle – the Love Candle – completing the circle of light that has guided our journey through this season of anticipation.

This final candle represents the culmination of God’s promise, reminding us of the ultimate expression of divine love that changed the course of human history.

The Light of Love

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17)

In these familiar verses, we find the heart of Christmas – a love so vast and unconditional that it prompted the Creator of the universe to send His Son to dwell among us. This profound truth finds its earthly echo in Mary’s story, a young woman whose acceptance of God’s plan demonstrates the transformative power of divine love.

When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, bringing news that would forever change her life, her response was one of humble acceptance and trust. “I am the Lord’s servant,” she said. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38) In this moment of surrender, Mary exemplified how human love can mirror divine love – through trust, acceptance, and willingness to serve God’s greater purpose.

The angels’ announcement of Christ’s birth to the shepherds was more than a mere declaration – it was a proclamation of God’s love breaking into our world. “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” This heavenly chorus celebrated the tangible manifestation of God’s love for humanity, a love that bridged the gap between heaven and earth.

As John later wrote, “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” (1 John 4:9-11)

Looking at our Advent wreath today, we see all four candles burning together – Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love – creating a fuller, brighter light. This progressive illumination mirrors our own spiritual journey through Advent. Each week has built upon the last, deepening our understanding and preparation for Christ’s coming. The four flames remind us that God’s love doesn’t exist in isolation but intertwines with hope, peace, and joy to create a complete picture of His promise.

As we stand on the threshold of Christmas, this fourth candle challenges us to consider how we can become bearers of God’s love in our daily lives. The light of divine love isn’t meant to be contained within church walls or limited to the Christmas season. Instead, it calls us to transform our relationships, actions, and perspectives throughout the year.

This Christmas, as we celebrate the ultimate gift of love in the birth of Jesus, let us ask ourselves: How can we reflect this divine love in our families, workplaces, and communities? How can we extend the warmth and light of Christ’s love to those who feel forgotten or unloved? The fourth candle reminds us that we are called not just to receive God’s love but to share it generously with others.

May this final week of Advent find us opening our hearts fully to the transformative power of God’s love. As all four candles burn brightly together, let their combined light remind us of the completeness of God’s love – a love that hoped, a love that brought peace, a love that sparked joy, and a love that ultimately gave everything for us in the person of Jesus Christ.

As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, may we carry this light of love forward, allowing it to illuminate our path and guide our actions throughout the coming year. For in doing so, we become living testimonies to the enduring power of that holy night when Love itself came down to dwell among us.
